Yes, Microsoft Copilot has a free version. You can use it for everyday AI assistance without buying a Microsoft 365 subscription. However, free Copilot chat is not the same entitlement as every Copilot feature inside Word, Excel, PowerPoint or a company’s Microsoft 365 environment.
Microsoft documentation checked October 13, 2026. Features and allowances can vary by account, subscription, region and rollout. This guide explains access; it is not a hands-on product benchmark.
What can you do with free Copilot?
Microsoft describes the free experience as useful for questions, writing, brainstorming, summaries and web-based answers. Signing in with a personal account unlocks additional experiences such as chat history. Start through Microsoft’s official Copilot service, rather than a third-party site using a similar name. For a first trial, choose a small task whose answer you can check. For example, ask for an outline of an email or a checklist for planning a presentation. Review the result before using it, especially names, dates and factual claims.
Free chat versus Copilot inside Microsoft 365
Eligible individual Microsoft 365 subscriptions can include Copilot in desktop apps, with usage limits. Microsoft says those desktop AI benefits are for the subscription owner; sharing a Family or Premium subscription does not automatically give every member the same desktop Copilot access. Work and school accounts have a different licensing and administration model. Check which Copilot license you have.
The practical distinction is where you want the help to happen. Asking a chat window to suggest an email is different from asking an assistant inside your work environment to use organizational context. Before paying, identify the specific application and task you need.
Can free Copilot upload PDFs and other files?
Microsoft’s file-upload documentation covers free Copilot Chat as well as personal and work/school experiences. It lists PDF, DOCX, XLSX, PPTX and several image and text formats, with up to 20 files in a conversation and 50 MB per file. Use the plus icon to attach a supported file and then ask a specific question. Source: Microsoft file-upload documentation.
These are upload limits, not a promise that every page, chart or table will be interpreted perfectly. For an important document, ask where an answer came from and compare it with the original. Use only documents you are permitted to share with the service.
Is Copilot free with a work account?
Some eligible business subscriptions provide Copilot Chat access, while broader capabilities depend on licenses and organizational settings. A visible chat button does not prove that every work-data feature is included. Microsoft distinguishes basic chat access from additional licensed capabilities in its account and plan guide.
If you use a company laptop, ask your administrator what your account includes before buying a personal subscription for a work task.
When is a paid plan worth considering?
- You need a specific in-app workflow that your current account cannot access.
- You regularly reach a documented usage limit.
- You need organizational features approved and managed by your employer.
Make a short list of blocked tasks before comparing plans. Confirm the billing term, renewal price and included features on Microsoft’s official individual-plan page. Do not assume a temporary offer is the normal US renewal price.
Frequently asked questions
Do I need Microsoft 365 just to try Copilot?
No. The free Copilot experience is a starting point for general AI assistance. App-integrated features are a separate consideration.
Is free Copilot unlimited?
Do not treat “free” as unlimited access to every feature. Check the limit shown for your account and the relevant Microsoft documentation.
Why does my account look different from someone else’s?
Compare the account type, subscription ownership, application and region first. For workplace accounts, administration policies may also matter.
