Microsoft Copilot file upload not working? Start by separating three problems: an attachment that will not upload, a missing upload control, and a file that uploads but produces an unhelpful answer. Each needs a different check.
Documentation checked October 15, 2026. This guide combines Microsoft’s published requirements with general troubleshooting suggestions; it is not a hands-on test of every Copilot app or account.
Check the upload requirements first
Microsoft currently lists a 50 MB maximum per file and 20 files per conversation. Supported examples include PDF, DOCX, XLSX, PPTX, TXT, CSV, PNG and JPEG. Use the plus control and choose the file attachment option. If the conversation is full, begin another one. These requirements come from Microsoft’s file upload documentation; check that page if your app shows different limits.
Quick diagnosis
| What happens? | What to try first |
|---|---|
| One particular file fails | Check its size and format, then try opening it locally. |
| Every file fails | Try a fresh conversation and a small, non-sensitive test document. |
| The attachment control is missing | Check which Copilot app and account you are using. |
| The upload finishes, but the answer is wrong | Check the document’s readable text and narrow your question. |
1. Check the actual file, not just its name
Open the document in its normal application before uploading it. If it cannot open there, repair or export a fresh copy from the original source. Changing a filename from .zip to .pdf does not convert the contents.
For a large document, keep the original and export a smaller copy or split out the relevant pages using an application you trust. Check that the smaller version still contains the tables, labels and page numbers you need.
2. Run a simple isolation test
Create a small text document containing a few harmless sentences. Try attaching it in a new conversation, then ask Copilot to summarize it.
- If the test works: concentrate on the original document’s size, format or contents.
- If the test fails too: investigate the account, app, browser or connection before repeatedly editing the original file.
This is a diagnostic suggestion, not a guarantee that a particular error will be fixed.
3. If the upload button is missing
Note whether you are using the standalone Copilot website, a mobile app, or Copilot inside a Microsoft 365 application. Do not assume instructions for one interface will match another.
Check the account shown in your profile. For a work or school account, ask your administrator whether the attachment feature is available in that environment. Do not move company documents to a personal account to bypass a restriction.
For an introduction to the chat interface, see our Microsoft Copilot beginner’s guide.
4. Rule out a browser or app problem
Save any unsent text, refresh the page and retry the small test file. If necessary, try an updated browser or update the mobile app. A private browsing session can help isolate saved browser state, although it may require signing in again.
If another browser works, investigate browser-specific settings or extensions one at a time. Keep organizational security controls in place. Record which browser works so you can give support a useful comparison.
5. If a PDF uploads but Copilot cannot use it well
An uploaded attachment is not proof that every page was interpreted correctly. Try selecting and copying a sentence from the PDF into a text editor. If that fails, the document may contain scanned page images rather than selectable text.
Consider making a searchable copy with OCR, then check the extracted text against the original. OCR can misread numbers, columns and names. Ask a focused question about a short section before requesting a summary of the entire document.
Example prompt: “From the section titled Project Timeline, list the milestones and their dates. If a date is unclear, say so instead of guessing.” Verify the answer against the document before relying on it.
6. Collect details before contacting support
If the issue persists, record the exact error message, app or browser version, account type, file extension, approximate size and whether the small test document succeeded. Include when the problem occurred. Share a redacted screenshot rather than a confidential document unless your approved support process requires it.
Frequently asked questions
Should I upgrade to fix an upload error?
Do not buy a subscription solely on the assumption that it will fix an unexplained failure. Identify the error first and confirm the features of the specific product you use. Our Copilot free versus paid guide explains the broader differences.
Will starting a new chat fix every upload problem?
No. It is useful for isolating a conversation-specific problem, but it will not repair a damaged document or resolve an account restriction.
Can I rename an unsupported file to a supported extension?
No. Export or convert a copy using an appropriate application, then open the result to confirm it is valid.
What if the file uploads successfully but the summary misses information?
Treat that as an answer-quality issue. Ask about a smaller section, request references to the relevant headings or pages, and compare the response with the source. A confident answer can still be incomplete.
